Alia Bhatt’s stellar performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi has earned her her first National Award. Accompanied by her husband, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia graced the National Film Awards ceremony in Delhi on October 17. As pictures and videos of Alia at the ceremony went viral, fans were quick to notice her choice of attire as she wore her wedding saree for this special occasion.

In videos and pictures circulating on social media, Alia can be seen wearing the same Sabyasachi saree that she adorned on her wedding day. At the ceremony, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “There is a lot of gratitude in my heart to get the opportunity to portray such beautiful character, so wonderfully imagined by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I am really missing him today. He is a person I have always looked up to and I will never stop thanking him for what he has given me.” Alia shares the Best Actress award with Kriti Sanon, who won it for Mimi.
In a previous conversation with Vogue, Alia shared her reasons for choosing a saree over a lehenga for her wedding attire. She said, “I love a saree. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film is an adaptation of the life of Gangubai Kothewali, drawing inspiration from S Hussain Zaidi’s book, Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Gangubai Kathiawadi also claimed several other National Awards, including Best Screenplay (Adapted) for Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Utkarshini Vashishtha, Best Dialogue Writer for Utkarshini and Prakash Kapadia, and Best Editing for Sanjay Leela Bhansali at the 69th National Awards.
