Alia Bhatt, who won the Best Actor award for Gangubai Kathaiwadi (jointly with Kriti Sanon who won for Mimi) at the 69th National Film Awards made a case for sustainability as she rewore her wedding sari. Posing for the shutterbugs at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi alongside her husband Ranbir Kapoor who looked dapper in a black sherwani, Alia‘s choice of her ivory Sabyasachi sari with a delicate gold embroidery, won our hearts all over again.

Recall that Alia wore the sari with a veil covering her head and paired it with jewellery from Sabyasachi for her wedding on April 14, 2022. However, for the esteemed award function where she received the honour from President Droupadi Murmu, Alia completed her look with flowers in her hair, reminiscent of her Gangubai…look.

Designer Gautam Gupta, creative director, Asha Gautam said that Alia made a “great statement” by wearing her wedding sari on another special day of her life. “Any heirloom sari has this added value of being reused irrespective of trends and seasons,” he highlighted.

Wearing your wedding attire again is a fantastic idea because it evokes fond memories and emotions, shared Shilpi Gupta, founder, Shilpi Gupta Designs.

“Reusing and restyling your wedding saree or lehenga is very special. As we move toward a more sustainable future, we must choose versatile options. This will make you think creatively and outside the box. Try to make the most of your wedding outfits by incorporating modern flair,” Shilpi told indianepxress.com.

How to style your wedding attire when re-wearing them?

When styling, ensure that you clearly define the look. One would definitely like to make their appearance elegant and appealing. You can add a pop of colour to your bridal sari by styling it with a blouse of a different hue, shared Shilpi, adding that the contrast will make one feel and look unique and attractive.

Gautam too agreed and said that pairing a different blouse or a plain shirt on the lehengas can make it apt for the occasion. “One can do away with the dupatta if they want to wear just the lehenga and choli,” shared Gautam.

Shilpi listed some additional styling pointers.

*You can have your sari tailored into a draped gown to give the traditional outfit a contemporary edge. “There’s nothing more amazing than having your saris tailored into jackets, anarkalis, A-lines, and capes that you can wear separately with pants and jeans. These contemporary styles of clothing add volume to your wardrobe,” said Shilpi.
