A day after a woman’s decomposing body — with burn marks and chained limbs — was found in West Delhi, police said she was a 30-year-old Swiss national who is suspected to have been invited to the country, tortured and murdered by a businessman she had refused to marry.

Police Saturday arrested the gemstone dealer, Janakpuri resident Gurpreet, after tracking down a second-hand car in which he killed the woman, said DCP (West) Vichitra Veer.

Police said Gurpreet met the woman around three years ago when he went to Switzerland to meet a relative. The two had kept in touch since then.

“The two became close through a common friend circle… Gurpreet asked her to marry him, but she said she was already in a relationship. This infuriated Gurpreet and he came back (to India). Thereafter, he convinced the woman to come to Delhi for a vacation and even showed her an itinerary of famous places she could visit,” said an officer.

Not suspecting anything amiss, the woman arrived in Delhi on October 11 and stayed at a Janakpuri hotel for a week before Gurpreet picked her up, offering to drive her around the city in his car, police said.

“He took her to Vishnu Garden where he strangled her and fled, leaving her body in the vehicle…He came back the next day to check on the body which had begun decomposing,” said the officer quoted above.

“Fearing that the stench from the body might attract attention, he drove the vehicle to Tilak Nagar, picked the body out and dumped it behind the MCD park,” said this officer.

Gurpreet bought the second-hand car from a West Delhi shop which police traced using its registration number and CCTV footage.

CCTV footage near the spot shows two men getting out of a car and throwing the woman’s body behind an MCD school, located in Tilak Nagar. Police believe the woman was killed three days ago and that Gurpreet inflicted burn injuries on her.

“The other accused, who helped Gurpreet, are being identified and will be nabbed,” said the officer.

Over Rs 2 crore in cash was seized from Gurpreet’s residence and police have alerted the Income Tax Department about the same.

“There were blisters all over the body of the victim and there were cut marks on the wrist of the victim too… we are establishing what tools the accused used to torture the woman and kill her… no one else other than Gurpreet has been able to identify the woman,” said the officer.
