Surat: On Sunday, when crores of Indian cricket fans were desperately praying forWorld Cup victory, a 25-year-old ‘bahu’s’ heart in a residential society in Navsari was also pounding. She didn’t care who would win, but herfamily memberstook her innocuouspredictionaboutAustralia’s victory a tad seriously. Her comment riled the family members so much that she had to call 181 Abhayam Women’s helpline to thwart a possible assault on her.Around 8.15pm, when Travis Head’s assault was snatching the match from India’s hands, she commented that Australia was all set to romp home comfortably. Little did she know that the elders and other relatives, who had come to watch the grand finale, would pick up a bitter quarrel with her.No sooner had she said this, than her maternal uncle chided the woman, saying, “You live in India and wish ill about the country.” While Australia was cruising to victory, another duel was playing out in the house as the chastised woman felt hurt by the uncle’s remarks. She told her in-laws to intervene but they were not inclined to support her or diffuse the tension brewing in the house. The woman then nudged her mother-in-law to draw her attention to the situation. Sensing that all family members were fuming and she would have to wage a lone battle, the woman dialled 181 for help. After getting the call, an Abhayam team rushed there. “Around seven members came out of the society. We told the woman not to get so worked up. We also told the family members that victory and defeat are part and parcel of any game and everyone should enjoy the match with sportsmanship spirit,’’ said a counsellor from Abhayam.Ultimately, Cummins’ men had the last laugh and the woman too was saved from shedding tears. We also published the following articles recently
