GURGAON: TheSirhaul borderonDelhi-Jaipur Expresswaywas choked with heavy traffic as vehicles moved at a snail’s pace on Thursday evening. The tailback reached up toIFFCO Chowk.The traffic police deployed additional manpower to ensure movement of the vehicles. Thetraffic congestionstarted from 5.30pm and theexpresswayremained choked till late evening.Police attributed the traffic jam to a large number of weddings in Delhi. A police officer said there are a large number of banquet halls and farmhouses in Rajokri, Dhaula Kuan and surrounding areas due to which the service lane of the expressway was choked and it further choked the main carriageway on NH-8.“The traffic volume was higher than usual and it is expected to be the same for next few days due to peak wedding season,” said a police officer from the traffic wing of Gurgaon police.According to an estimate, around 15,000 weddings took place on Thursday in Delhi. Out of these, most weddings took place in areas around NH-8, Dwarka, Dhaula Kuan, Chattarpur and surrounding areas. In the areas like Chattarpur and Rajokri there are venues next to each other. Mehrauli-Gurgaon road also has multiple wedding venues around it.Sumit Bharadwaj, who works in Udyog Vihar and lives in Delhi, said the distance which they cover normally in 40 minutes took more than 90 minutes. “Vehicles were moving at a very slow pace and it took around 30 minutes to cross the Sirhaul border,” Bharadwaj said.The people who regularly travel between Delhi and Gurgaon said that traffic jam on the expressway, particularly at Sirhaul border, has become a regular affair. “We talk about pollution but no effort is made to reduce traffic jams which cause vehicular pollution and wastage of fuel,” said Pradeep Sharma, a resident of New Delhi.The continuous traffic jam and congestion at Sirhaul border has remained one of the biggest challenges of Gurgaon police, who always face citizens’ anger for slow movement of traffic at the border.
