Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the martyrs of the Mumbai terror attack of November 26, 2008, which is referred to as the 26/11 attack, and said the country got up again after that shock and has been “crushing terrorism”. He was speaking on Sunday during the 107th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
He added that the date, November 26, is the same on which the Constituent Assembly adopted the Indian Constitution in 1949. Recalling that the Constituent Assembly also had women members, PM Modi said that the recent constitutional amendment Bill to pave the wave for women’s reservation was another step towards their empowerment.
Modi, however, lamented that the first amendment to the Indian Constitution ended up curtailing the freedom of speech and expression. He was referring to the first amendment made in 1951, moved by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, in which ‘public order’ was added as a restriction on the Freedom of Expression in Article 19 (2).
PM Modi said that 2,000 amendments were made to the Constitution at the stage of drafting, and added that there have been 106 amendments to the Constitution, as per the needs of the times, after it came into force in 1950. He recalled the 44th Constitutional Amendment Act, through which corrections were made to the amendments made during the Emergency.
Expressing satisfaction over an increasing number of transactions going digital, PM Modi called upon people to take a vow to perform only digital transactions for a month, and send him their photographs after one month, besides sharing their experiences with him.
Modi also made another pitch for buying locally made goods, reiterating his slogan ‘vocal for local’. He expressed satisfaction that people purchased more local goods than before during the Diwali, Bhai Dooj and Chhath festival season – which saw business to the tune of Rs 4 lakh crore – and urged affluent families to organise weddings in India in the coming wedding season rather than abroad, so as to boost the local economy. He urged people to buy Indian-made goods during the upcoming wedding season.
Modi said that the number of Indian patents had seen an unprecedented 31 per cent rise last year, and said that intelligence, ideas and innovation have become the hallmark of Indian youth.
