NOIDA: Twoliftsof the same tower in ahighriseinGreater Noida Westhalted midway on Tuesday afternoon due to a power cut and trapped ten residents, including eight children, between the first and second floors of the tower for nearly 30 minutes.When the maintenance team members finally reached the spot, they had to pull out residents one by one through the openings available.A video of the incident, which took place in La Residentia society, is doing the rounds on social media.All residents had boarded the lifts around 2.15pm on Tuesday. Pankaj Kumar, one of the stuck residents, said, “Every adult in the lifts was with children who had just returned from their school. We boarded the lifts from the ground floor. However, after the power cut, the lifts got stuck.”Six people remained stuck in one lift, while four were in another. Kumar said each lift should be equipped with an ARD (automatic rescue device) to reach the nearest floor in case of a power failure, followed by the opening of its door to allow users’ safe passage.“We were stuck in the lift for nearly 30 minutes. We tried to use the alarm buttons to open the doors. But we were not even aware of where we were stuck exactly. Thankfully, my mobile phone was working. I tried calling the maintenance team, but nobody picked up,” added Kumar.Despite repeated calls, the maintenance team did not pick up. So, Kumar called a few other residents of the condominium. They, in turn, contacted the maintenance team, and its members opened the lift doors with their keys and pulled out the residents, including the children.The Uttar Pradesh assembly is likely to pass a legislation to make lifts safer for users during the winter session, which starts on November 28. It will include lift specification, maintenance and registration terms, with provisions for penal action against agencies for any negligence.The MLA of Jewar, Dhirendra Singh said he had discussed the issue with chief minister Yogi Adityanath, additional chief secretary Mahesh Gupta and power minister AK Sharma, who assured him of passing a draft lifts and elevators Bill during the upcoming assembly session.We also published the following articles recently
