Pithoragarh:Jhulaghat marketon theIndo-Nepal borderwas closed on Monday following a call by the traders’ association after Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) personnel reportedly stopped aNepalese manfrom takinggroceriesin bulk — 60kg flour and 30kg sugar — from the market across the border.This led to a confrontation between local shopkeepers and security personnel after which markets were closed for some time.Later, following the district administration’s intervention, the shops were reopened.Jagdish Joshi, president of traders’ union, said, “Jhulaghat market is mostly dependent on Nepalese customers. In the past, there have been instances where SSB personnel harassed customers from across theborderwhich affected business. We called for a bandh but after a meeting with district administration officials, it was called off.”Bhuwan Uperity, a customs officer at Jhulaghat, said, “Except flour, sugar and rice, other items can be taken across the border by Nepalese citizens but only in small quality for domestic use. Traders need an IEC code for taking groceries in bulk for business purposes.”Shiv Kumar Varanwal, ADM Pithoragarh, said, “Some traders from Jhulaghat market had some confusion regarding items for export to Nepal so they called a strike. This wedding season, traders estimate biz of 4.7L cr across IndiaThe Indian wedding industry is experiencing a resurgence after a lean period caused by the Covid pandemic. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimates that the wedding season, which began on November 23 and lasts for 23 days, will generate business worth Rs 4.7 lakh crore. This is an increase from Rs 3.75 lakh crore in 2022, Rs 3.10 lakh crore in the previous year, and Rs 2.65 lakh crore in 2019. The industry faced a historic downturn in 2020 due to the pandemic. CAIT predicts that there will be 38 lakh marriages during this season, compared to 32 lakh in 2022.
Finland will close its border with Russia over migrant concernsFinland will close its last border crossing with Russia due to concerns of Moscow using migrants as part of hybrid warfare to destabilize the country following its entry into NATO. The Finnish government has accused Russia of organizing the entry of migrants into Finland through the border checkpoints. Since August, around 900 migrants have crossed from Russia into Finland, prompting the closure of all crossing points on the entire eastern border. Finland suspects that Russia is guiding migrants to the border in harsh winter conditions, and considers it a form of hybrid warfare.
