Why destination wedding is the flavour of the season

Matches might be made in heaven but weddings are solemnised on earth in exotic locales. Crafted to make celebrations memorable and a once-in-a-lifetime affair, destination weddings are increasingly becoming the flavour and dream of most couples.

The numbers may vary from year to year, but the trend is significantly growing in India. It’s estimated that around 20-25 per cent of weddings this season would be destination-based, domestic as well as international.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advocated a ‘Wed in India’ movement, urging affluent Indian families to hold destination weddings in the country rather than abroad.

Let’s look at why destination weddings are getting popular and what the preferred locations overseas and within India are this season.

An international affair

International destination weddings offer unique experiences and advantages such as cultural fusion, intimate gatherings, exotic locations, and extended celebrations.

Anam Zubair, director and marketing head-India, Wedding Wire, says, “They offer access to stunning locales that might not be available locally. From beachside resorts to historic castles or vineyards, these destinations provide picturesque backdrops that can make the wedding unforgettable.”

Often, these weddings tend to be more intimate due to the distance, allowing couples to celebrate with their closest friends and family in a breathtaking setting. They can also blend different cultures and traditions, incorporating elements from the destination’s heritage into the wedding ceremonies, making it a rich cultural experience. “Guests often see these weddings as not just an event but an opportunity for a vacation. It’s a chance for everyone to explore a new place,” adds Zubair.

International destination weddings offer a distinctive and enchanting experience for couples seeking something beyond the conventional. With stunning backdrops, such as Bali’s tropical beaches or Tuscany’s picturesque vineyards, the chosen destination becomes an integral part of the love story.

According to Rajesh Namby, general manager, Raffles Udaipur, “The extended celebration period sets these weddings apart. Spanning several days, it allows for more bonding opportunities, creating enduring memories in a relaxed and joyous ambience. Couples also have the chance to incorporate unique elements, such as local customs and cuisine, providing an immersive and unforgettable experience for guests.”

These weddings, therefore, go beyond the ordinary, allowing couples to craft a celebration that mirrors their unique story in a setting aligned with their dreams and aspirations.

Some of the most preferred international wedding destinations are Bali in Indonesia, Tuscany in Italy, Santorini in Greece and Rivieria Maya in Mexico.

Homemade magic

At the same time, an emotional shift is happening and a lot of couples are exploring destinations within India. Call it the charm of culture and heritage, picturesque landscapes or the availability of properties that cater to different wedding styles and preferences, a number of destinations are finding takers increasingly.

“The charm of intimate, heritage-rich destinations within India is unmistakable. Couples are increasingly drawn to the opulence and romantic ambience offered by locales such as Udaipur, which stands out for its timeless appeal,” says Namby.

Couples this year are gravitating towards captivating domestic wedding destinations, each offering its unique charm. If Jaipur is enticing with its majestic palaces and rich cultural heritage, Dehradun, nestled in the Himalayan foothills, offers a serene setting for intimate weddings amidst lush landscapes.

Goa’s pristine beaches and vibrant culture make it a perennial favourite, Mahabalipuram’s UNESCO World Heritage sites and coastal beauty provide a historical and elegant backdrop, and Kovalam in Kerala is alluring with its crescent-shaped beaches and serene backwaters. “These domestic locales present couples with a diverse range of options, from regal and historical settings to serene beachfront locales, allowing them to curate weddings that align with their unique preferences,” adds Namby.

Some of the popular destinations at home are Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Kerala, Goa and Agra.

Shashank Gupta, co-founder, TailorMade Experiences, says, “Every year, destination weddings can be divided into two parts. Couples who are very clear opt for a Royal Rajasthani or a beach Goan wedding or a chilled out mountain wedding. The other segment is of the couples who are open to explore new destinations. For example, last year, we did one of the biggest weddings in Kashmir.”

Local flavour

In that context, encouraging the concept of “vocal for local” in Indian weddings aligns with the spirit of promoting indigenous talent, culture and craftsmanship within the country. “Opting for domestic wedding locations and local vendors not only supports the local economy but also showcases the diverse beauty and rich heritage of India,” points out Zubair.

It also fosters a sense of pride in showcasing the country’s cultural richness while promoting sustainable and eco-friendly celebrations, contributing to the growth of local businesses and artisans within the wedding ecosystem.
