With just 497 residents, Vatican City, the world’s smallest country, boasts a population smaller than many Indian wedding guest lists.

As India’s population continues to grow, many travellers are seeking less crowded destinations. Among these is Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, both in size and population. Located in the heart of Rome, Italy, Vatican City spans just 0.44 square kilometres and is home to approximately 497 people, according to World Population Review.

To put this in perspective, an average Indian wedding often hosts around 500 guests—enough to outnumber the entire population of Vatican City. Known for its grand and extravagant wedding celebrations, India’s “big fat weddings” often dwarf the population of several small nations.

Other sparsely populated countries include Monaco, with 38,631 residents, and Tuvalu, which has a population of around 9,646. These countries, along with scenic destinations like the Marshall Islands and San Marino, offer serene escapes from the bustling life of large cities, drawing tourists from all over the world.

Despite its size, Vatican City holds immense significance as the administrative hub of the Roman Catholic Church, attracting millions of visitors annually. Meanwhile, nations like Tuvalu face challenges like rising sea levels and harsh weather, though they continue to be prime destinations for those seeking a tranquil getaway.
