Gold has long symbolized wealth, tradition, and cultural significance in India, particularly among women. Deeply intertwined with Indian culture, gold jewelry holds a prominent role in celebrations, especially weddings, where it is considered an essential element. From ornate bridal sets to simple gold bars, no Indian wedding is complete without the presence of gold, often gifted as a token of prosperity and security. This cultural attachment has led Indian women to accumulate significant amounts of gold, much of it passed down through generations, making India a global leader in household gold ownership.
According to the World Gold Council, Indian women collectively own approximately 24,000 tons of gold, which accounts for about 11% of the world’s gold in jewelry form. This remarkable figure surpasses the combined gold reserves of the top five gold-holding countries. For context, the United States owns 8,000 tons of gold, Germany holds 3,300 tons, Italy has 2,450 tons, France possesses 2,400 tons, and Russia retains 1,900 tons. Even when these reserves are combined, they pale in comparison to the gold owned by Indian women.
South India plays a particularly significant role in this phenomenon, holding 40% of the country’s gold. Tamil Nadu alone contributes 28% to this total. A study by the World Gold Council for 2020–21 estimated that Indian households owned between 21,000 and 23,000 tons of gold. By 2023, this figure had grown to 24,000–25,000 tons, equating to over 25 million kilograms. This immense gold reserve not only represents personal wealth but also supports India’s economy, accounting for approximately 40% of the nation’s GDP.
The Indian government’s Income Tax laws also reflect the cultural significance of gold ownership. Married women are permitted to hold up to 500 grams of gold, unmarried women up to 250 grams, and men up to 100 grams. These regulations underscore the importance of gold as a symbol of wealth and security, particularly for women.
