A wedding ceremony in Uttar Pradesh turned bizarre when the inebriated groom accidentally garlanded the bride’s best friend during the ritual, prompting the bride to call off the nuptials.
It all started when Ravindra Kumar, the groom, arrived late to his wedding and got drunk with his friends before the ceremony in Bareilly’s Naughwan Bhagwantpur village. On realising his mistake, he then garlanded a male friend and an elderly guest, leaving the guests stunned. Radha Devi, the bride, slapped Kumar and walked away, eventually calling off the wedding, TOI reported.
The report further stated that the bride’s family had splurged over Rs 10 lakh on the wedding preparations. The bride later filed a police complaint.
Devi’s brother, Omkar Verma, alleged that the groom’s family wanted more dowry and may have staged the incident to humiliate them. He also claimed that Kumar had misrepresented his profession, falsely stating he was a farmer when he was a truck driver.

Kumar was subsequently taken into police custody and a medical test confirmed that he was drunk. The police charged him under sections pertaining to the Dowry Act. Despite his family’s efforts to salvage the situation, Radha refused to reconsider her decision.
Last week, a bride-to-be in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar ran away with her female friend just hours before the ceremony. To prevent embarrassment, the groom’s family reportedly spread a rumour that she had died of a cardiac arrest while getting ready at the salon.
