PANIPAT: A bride called off her wedding after disliking the lehenga gifted by her soon-to-be in-laws. The disagreement escalated into a heated argument between both families over the lehenga and artificial jewelry, eventually turning violent. The celebration of love quickly became a controversial topic in the state. Amid the chaos, a wedding guest brandished a sword, creating further unrest.
A woman from Panipat and a man from Amritsar were set to marry on February 23. However, tensions flared as soon as the groom arrived at the venue. The bride’s family was displeased with the lehenga and jewelry he had brought for the bride, leading to a heated confrontation.
The groom’s family alleged that the bride and her relatives made excessive demands before the wedding. Initially, she requested a lehenga worth Rs 20,000 but later insisted on one worth Rs 40,000. They also claimed that her family pressured them for expensive gifts.
On the other hand, the bride’s mother, a widow, accused the groom’s family of failing to meet even basic expectations. She said that they provided artificial jewelry instead of gold and substandard garlands for the rituals.
Amid the commotion, a guest pulled out a sword, prompting police intervention. Eventually, the wedding was called off by mutual agreement.
A Dial-112 investigation officer confirmed that authorities responded to the incident and found that both families had decided to cancel the wedding. The parties have been handed over to the concerned police station to resolve the matter.
