‘Have at least one destination wedding in Uttarakhand’: PM renews appeal at summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday renewed his call to have “destination weddings” in India, while speaking at the Uttarakhand Investors’ Summit in Dehradun. “Have at least one destination wedding in Uttarakhand,” PM Modi said at the event.

Last month, the Prime Minister questioned the trend of “big families” organising weddings overseas, and urged them to hold such events in India, instead.

The Prime Minister said that just like ‘Make in India’, a new movement called ‘Wed in India’ should be started in the country. He encouraged young people to get married in India, emphasising the country’s strength and abilities.

“In our country, it is believed that God forms pairs for everyone. Then, why do these pairs go to foreign countries to start their new journey (of married life)?” PM Modi asked.

He said that young people should have at least one wedding in Uttarakhand as part of the destination wedding trend, so that the hill state becomes a popular “destination wedding spot”.

“If 5,000 such weddings happen in a single year, then the infrastructure of Uttarakhand would improve on its own,” the Prime Minister said at the Uttarakhand Investors’ Summit.

During the 107th edition of ‘Mann ki Baat’, PM Modi said that he is troubled by the trend of destination weddings outside the country as followed by some “big families”. He urged those to be held within India, stressing that it would ensure the country’s money does not leave its shores.

“Even poor people will tell their children about your wedding. Can you expand this mission of ‘Vocal for Local’? Why don’t we hold such wedding ceremonies in our own country?” he asked during ‘Mann ki Baat’.

On Friday too, the Prime Minister pinned his statement on the “millionaires and billionaires” of India, among whom the trend of overseas weddings is prominently noticed.
