Indians spent a hefty amount of money on weddings. From pre-and post-wedding ceremonies, Indian weddings are too elaborate and span around weeks. However, considering the current inflation, we spoke to Avish Thakurgota, Co-founder of Behind The Scene Weddings – Destination Wedding Planner, Udaipur, Rajasthan to understand the impact of inflation on wedding spending in urban cities and smaller towns.
Impact Of Inflation On Wedding Spending In Urban Cities Vs Rural Areas
Avish Thakurgota said, “While inflation is at an all-time, people often end up spending a lot more than their estimated budget on big fat Indian weddings. They want to invite all their relatives, whether they are close or distant, neighbours, friends and even acquaintances. As the number of guests goes up, so does the wedding budget.”
He highlighted that in urban cities like Delhi and Mumbai, hosting a wedding dinner for about 1000 people can easily set you back by a crore. As it is not just the wedding day, but functions like Haldi, Mehendi and Sangeet also become a grand affair. And in this age of rising inflation, not many can afford such a lavish wedding.
The cost of halls, catering services, and decorations are rising leading to a reduction in the number of guests at weddings.
However, in rural areas, people prefer a simple wedding and thus the wedding spending is comparatively less than in urban weddings.
How Destination Wedding Can Be Done On Budget?
The idea of destination weddings has emerged as a popular option for those who want to do an intimate wedding with 100-300 people.
While many would think that a destination wedding would be more expensive, there are ways to have a budget-friendly destination wedding too.
Avish highlighted that places like Ranakpur and Kumbalgarh are much cheaper when compared to the ones being hosted in big cities.

He advises hiring an experienced wedding planner who has great camaraderie with local vendors and they will be able to curate a designer wedding with flawless show flow and every event different from the other.
They will also give personalised attention to the guests and ensure that they are well taken care of. Right from offering them a welcome kit of goodies and snacks to ensuring a comfortable stay to arranging for beauticians and mehendi artists, they can arrange everything locally.
This not just brings down the cost of the wedding compared to big cities, but ensures that guests enjoy it to the fullest. The couple can also be stress-free and enjoy the celebration, within their budget.
