KOLKATA: A 32-year-oldBangladeshi con-womanwho used to cross the border on a medical visa and allegedly marry young men, later lodging cases of domestic violence against them to blackmail them, was arrested byBidhannagar Policeon Thursday.
Police saidSahana Sadiquecame to India at least six times in the last four years and married four different men using fake Indian identities. None of the marriages was registered.
She lodgeddomestic violence casesagainst all of them in the Rajarhat and New Town areas.
The last time she married was in Oct 2024, and on Thursday, she went to police claiming her husband took some obscene photographs of her and was allegedly threatening to make them public.
“While we were lodging the complaint, she seemed familiar. We ran a background check and found she lodged similar complaints in the past. We grilled her and found out that she was a con-woman,” said a senior officer.
Odisha incident
In September 2024, Odisha police arrested a man accused of marrying over a dozen women across multiple states and blackmailing them with explicit videos.
The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Biranchi Narayan Nath from Chhendipada in Angul district, allegedly targeted unmarried women, widows, and divorcees in Odisha, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi. Most of his victims were working professionals.
Accused Posed as Central Government Officer
Nath created fake profiles on matrimonial sites under the category of ‘second marriage,’ pretending to be a prospective groom. He assumed multiple identities, sometimes posing as a railway officer, an Income Tax officer, or a customs and central excise officer, according to a senior crime branch official. Nath holds a postgraduate degree in political science.
