Indian weddings go personal, lavish and digital

WeddingWire India, a subsidiary of global wedding planning leader The Knot Worldwide, has released its annual wedding survey, offering new insight into the changing landscape of weddings in the country. Drawing from the responses of over 2,100 couples from across India, the report reflects a wide array of backgrounds, including varying ethnicities, income levels, ages, sexual orientations, and gender identities. The findings highlight the evolving tastes, values, and financial choices of couples as they plan one of life’s most significant milestones.

Gen Z and changing demographics
As per the report, the average age of Indian couples getting married now stands at 30 years. One of the standout revelations from the survey is the sharp generational shift. A remarkable 62 per cent of engaged couples now belong to Gen Z—a staggering 49 per cent increase from the previous year. In contrast, Millennials, who have long dominated the wedding market, now account for 30 per cent of couples. This marks a notable 54 per cent decrease in their share since last year. Despite the decline, Millennials still represent a significant segment, being involved in one out of every three weddings over the past year.

Venue costs soar high
Weddings are becoming more lavish, particularly when it comes to venue selection. The average cost of a wedding venue has surged to approximately Rs 6 lakhs. Notably, 40 per cent of couples are spending about Rs 7.5 lakhs on venues, while 31 per cent are willing to go beyond Rs 10 lakhs. This growing financial outlay underscores the increasing importance placed on curating the perfect ambience for the big day.

February remains the most popular month for proposals, closely followed by December, reflecting the continuing influence of traditional timing. However, proposals are becoming more inclusive and communal, with 16 per cent of couples reporting that friends and family were present during the special moment, adding a personal and emotional layer to engagements.

Budgeting as top priority
Budget remains a significant factor, with 53 per cent of couples considering it while planning. However, it has been surpassed by other priorities—namely food, drink, and guest experience. This change points to a shift in mindset: couples are placing greater emphasis on creating a memorable and enjoyable experience for their guests rather than solely focussing on cost-saving measures. High-quality catering, curated entertainment, and immersive decor are now cornerstones of the modern Indian wedding.

Weddings remain a major financial undertaking. On average, couples are dedicating 21 per cent of their annual household income to wedding expenses. This reflects the importance of the event in Indian culture and the willingness of couples to invest significantly to ensure it reflects their dreams and values.

Digital tools dominating weddings
In today’s tech-savvy era, digital communication has become central to wedding planning. A substantial 79 per cent of couples are now using WhatsApp to relay wedding details to friends and family. Additionally, personalised wedding websites are gaining popularity, aiding in RSVP management, itinerary sharing, and enhancing the overall guest experience. These tools also help reduce logistical stress, further enhancing the celebration.

Personalisation defining 2024 weddings
Personalisation has emerged as a defining theme. From customised wedding outfits (chosen by 61 per cent of couples) to eco-friendly elements (adopted by 27 per cent), and intimate “first look” photo moments (preferred by 21 per cent), couples are finding ways to infuse meaning and individuality into their celebrations. Furthermore, weddings are no longer just a single-day affair—35 per cent of couples are hosting three-day events, while 32 per cent extend their festivities to four or more days, reflecting a growing trend towards multi-day celebrations.

Snigdha Johar, Consumer Marketing Manager, at WeddingWire India, shared, “Weddings are no longer just about tradition—they are becoming personalised, unforgettable experiences. Couples are putting a fresh twist on their special day by creating unique moments that reflect their individuality. Through our survey, we’re excited to keep our community and vendors in the loop with the latest trends, ensuring they stay ahead of the game and continue to offer what couples truly want.”
