Kanpur: TheAnganwadicentres all over the district observed “Handwashing Day” on Wednesday.Diarrhoea and respiratoryinfections are two major causes of child mortality in India as they are directly related to dirty hands that are not washed properly.According to the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-21) about 7.1 percent children under five years of age in the district have been found suffering from diarrhoea and about 3.9 percent have respiratory infection.Children can be protected from diarrhoea and respiratory infections by washing hands with soap which is one of the most effective and the cheapest methods, said district programme officer Durgesh Pratap Singh.“Ifhand hygieneis taken care of, this figure can definitely be reduced and the lives of children can be saved”, he said. Due to prolonged exposure of diarrhoea, children become vulnerable to malnutrition which affects their entire life cycle. It is therefore important to inculcate the habit of proper hygiene in children right from childhood and try to incorporate it in their behaviour.“A mother should wash her hands thoroughly with soap and water for 40 seconds before touching or breastfeeding the child, before cooking and eating immediately after coughing or sneezing and after taking care of sick people after defecation”, Singh advised. According to the state of hand washing 2021 annual report, most people still do not take hand washing seriously, especially children due to which children become victims of diseases like diarrhoea and pneumonia every day.The report says that though 85.6 per cent of school-going children in India know about hand washing, only 24.9 percent of them wash their hands regularly. We also published the following articles recently
