BM Shoppers’ Avenue: Brides, give this your ear

Looking for the perfect earring? Here’s a guide to all the styles available

Most wedding stylists recommend zeroing in on the jewellery before choosing your wedding outfit. And while everyone stresses the importance of having good necklaces, we think that bridal earrings are the understated jewellery that people often ignore. There are many types of bridal earrings that are trending, but not all will suit your needs (or your face, or your outfit!) For that reason, we have come up with a guide to earrings for brides.

Bridal JhumkasJhumkas are multifarious earrings that suit almost every face and make a great choice for modern brides who want to keep their bridal jewellery on the traditional side. Jhumkas are available in a bevy of sizes, from 1-inch versions to designs that flaunt bells with large diameters. Jhumkas that have been a part of traditional Indian wedding repertoire, have been brought back to the fore by a slew of celebrities who chose these earrings to wear with their wedding outfits.

Jhumkas are also available in traditionalkundanversions where the earring itself is available in extra large size compared to the actual jhumka.

Pro Tip: Jhumkas are great for pairing with traditional saris and lehengas that are heavily embroidered.

Bridal StudsOf all the earring options, studs are not the most-preferred earrings with brides even though they are versatile and can add glamour to most outfits without taking away from the bridal ensemble. They suit all face types and are a failsafe choice.

Pro Tip: If you’re not someone who likes to wear both a heavy necklace and earrings together, opt for simple bridal studs with your ornate choker.

Chandbali EarringsWonder what makes the moon-inspired shape of the Chandbali earrings so famous? The crescent-shaped earrings, often embellished with crystals, precious stones, and fringed with tiny pearls are a beautiful blend of Hindu and Muslim design sensibilities and in turn a mainstay in both cultures. Though chandbalis are available in a bevy of sizes from small to shoulder-grazing ones, the most-preferred style for weddings is the mid-sized ones.

Pro Tip: Wearing big round maang tikkas that sit on the top half of the forehead are great jewellery options to wear along with chandbalis on the big day.

Earrings With Kaan ChainKaan chains were originally used as an accessory used to support heavy earrings. Traditionally, they were simple or embellished chains that would be slid on the earrings toward the front, go over the ear, and finally, the other end would be slid just before screwing in the fastener. However, of late, Kaan chains have become available as separate attachments that can be mixed and matched with any earrings.

Pro Tip: Kaan chains can be worn with any earrings, but, they look best with oversized chandbali earrings and deep neck blouses.

Floral Earrings for BridesMany brides are eschewing heavy bridal earrings for their pre-wedding events by turning toward light-weight yet statement-making earrings that are made entirely with flowers – both fresh and dry. These are great for shaking things out of predictability and great to wear to events where the mood is overall relaxed and laid back.

Pro Tip: While white floral earrings are popular, they are available and can be customised in several colors to match your mehendi or haldi outfit.

Dangler Earrings for BridesSimilar to jhumkas, dangler earrings also extend into designs below the earlobe that sway or move, however, the dangling part of the earrings is not a bell. Danglers can come in traditional settings or slightly modern designs. Whether traditional motifs or contemporary designs, danglers can look great with most Indian wedding outfits.

Pro Tip: Shoulder-dusting dangler earrings are a great jewellery option when you are not wearing a necklace.
