India: UP wedding takes violent twist after kiss goes wrong; groom’s family beaten up on stage

A wedding in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh descended into pandemonium after the groom kissed the bride on the wedding stage.

The groom’s public display of affection for his bride following the ‘varmala’ or garland ceremony in Hapur on Monday (May 20) led to an aggressive brawl between their families.

The incident, which unfolded at the wedding venue in Hapur’s Ashok Nagar, was triggered by the bride’s kin who started assaulting the groom’s relatives.

An argument arose between the two sides and a full-blown fistfight broke out.

Soon after, the bride’s family climbed on stage carrying sticks and beat up the groom’s family.

Six people, including the bride’s father, were injured in the clash.

The police were called in and seven people from both families were detained. The injured were rushed to a local hospital.

The bride’s family alleged that the groom forcibly kissed her on stage, while the groom said that the bride had insisted on being kissed after the varmala ceremony.

According to the police, the bride’s father had arranged the weddings of his two daughters on Monday night. While the first wedding took place smoothly, the second ceremony took a turn for the worse.

Senior Hapur police officer Rajkumar Agarwal said that so far, no written complaint had been received from either family in the case and action will be taken once a complaint is filed.

The six people have been charged for disturbing public peace under section 151 of the Indian Penal Code.
