Jalandhar wedding ceremony death sparks investigation after celebratory gunfire video surfaces.
The death of a 45-year-old man during a wedding ceremony in a Jalandhar village on February 20 created a stir online after complaints arose on Saturday that he had died following a celebratory firing, the police said. However, the family of the deceased — Paramjit Singh, the husband of village head Neeru Kaur — denied that the cause of death was a gunshot, and claimed he died of a sudden heart attack after the video of the ceremony surfaced online. The body was cremated in Chak Devraj village on Friday.
The police on Saturday ruled out the allegation as the officials confirmed that no gunshot wound was found on the body. They launched an investigation and reviewed the statements of the doctor who examined Singh posthumously, said an officer.
Singh was reportedly involved in a pre-wedding celebration, the video of which went viral on Saturday. In the footage, a group of people was seen dancing to Punjabi beats when gunfire was heard, and several dancers, including Singh, fell to the ground.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Surinder Mohan of Goraya police station stated that the villagers and family members who bathed the deceased before his cremation corroborated this claim.
The incident, which took place in the Phillaur constituency’s Goraya area, involved a shooter who fired three rounds in total. The police launched an investigation after the video emerged on social media.
The police have, meanwhile, booked Harman Singh from Barha Pind, the individual responsible for the celebratory gunfire, which is prohibited.
