India's destination wedding market was worth $4.3 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $26.6 billion by 2034, according to IMARC Group. That implies a compound annual growth rate of 21.87% across the 2026 to 2034 period.
The projection lands in the middle of a sustained government effort to keep those weddings inside the country. Speaking at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar on 7 March 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated a 'Wed in India' campaign, urging citizens to choose domestic destinations in order to support local tourism.
The same address carried a companion initiative, 'Chalo India', aimed at non-resident Indians and encouraging them to send family members to visit. Modi also asked visitors to Jammu and Kashmir to direct five to ten per cent of their spending towards local shopping, on the grounds that it generates employment.
““The constraint on domestic destination weddings may end up being rooms rather than appetite.””
The reasoning behind the campaign is not complicated. A wedding is among the largest single purchases an Indian family will ever make, and one held abroad exports that spending more or less in full: venue, catering, accommodation, decor, and the travel of every guest on the list.
Whether policy moves a market is a separate question from whether the market grows, and IMARC is forecasting the second rather than the first. A near-sixfold increase over nine years assumes both continued demand and the capacity to absorb it — and heritage properties in Rajasthan, backwater resorts in Kerala, and the coastline of Goa are finite in a way that a growth curve is not. The constraint on domestic destination weddings may end up being rooms rather than appetite.
