Two Big Wedding Studies Priced 2026. They Disagree by $1,800

Two of the largest wedding-industry surveys have published their 2026 cost figures, and they do not agree. The Knot puts the average American wedding at $34,200. Zola puts it at $36,000. The difference between the two headline numbers is larger than what The Knot says the average couple spends on photography.

The Knot's figure comes from its 2026 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed 10,474 US couples married in 2025. It breaks down to $292 a guest across an average guest list of 117, with a reception venue at $12,900, photography at $3,000, flowers at $2,800, and catering at $80 a head.

Zola's figure draws on its Wedding Cost Index alongside a 2026 spend survey of 720 couples questioned within 180 days of their wedding, with its wider First Look Report covering more than 11,500. It puts the venue at $8,573 and catering at $6,927.

The venue is where the two diverge most sharply: $12,900 against $8,573, for the same market in the same year. Both figures are honestly arrived at and both are averages, which is the point. A national average is a construction rather than a price list, and two reputable studies can build one from different samples and land more than $4,000 apart on the single largest line item.

Zola notes its own number has now held at $36,000 for a second consecutive year, while cautioning that a flat figure does not describe a flat experience — couples may be receiving slightly less for the same money than they did a year ago.

For anyone actually planning, the practical reading is that neither headline is a budget. Averages are pulled upward by the small number of very expensive weddings at the top, and neither study publishes what a couple in a particular city with a particular guest list should expect to pay. The per-guest figure travels better. At roughly $292 a head, the guest list is the budget, and every name added to it costs more than any single vendor decision is likely to save.
