Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez married on Tuesday 11 August in Cascais, the seaside town about 30 kilometres west of Lisbon. It was a civil ceremony, and the only people present were their five children.

Nothing was announced beforehand and no press attended. The couple posted a single photograph of their hands, wedding bands visible, captioned with nothing more than their two initials. It passed four million likes in under forty minutes. Ronaldo's public relations firm, the Brunswick Group, confirmed the marriage to AFP afterwards.

Rodríguez had announced their engagement on 11 August 2025, exactly a year earlier, with a ring Euronews reports as a 37-carat oval diamond valued between two and four and a half million euros. They met in 2016, when Ronaldo walked into the Gucci store in Madrid where Rodríguez was working.

The absence is what makes it worth reporting. Between them the couple hold more than 750 million social media followers. Ronaldo, 41, plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Rodríguez, 32, carried her own Netflix series. Any venue on earth would have hosted them, and the guest list ran to five people, all of whom live in the house.

The secrecy held to the end. Euronews notes that the press had gathered in Madeira the previous Sunday on a tip, and ended up covering a different couple's ceremony at the cathedral in Funchal.

The wedding industry has spent a decade treating scale as proof that a wedding mattered. The most photographed couple in world sport could have staged anything they wanted and picked a registry office and their own children.
